WEARING A MASK FOR A DIFFERENT REASON...

Helping my son Philip paint one of his projects.  Lego projects were a lot easier...

I believe it is important for parents to encourage the interests of their children.  When I was a teen, my parents allowed me to dismantle a car engine in their living room...that's encouragement!  For a month, the engine was in pieces on newspaper laid on the living room floor while I rebuilt it.  I was blessed with wonderful parents who loved to spend time with us.

My father was born in Puerto Rico, and immigrated to the United States at age 19.  At the time, Spanish was his native language.  He was met at Ellis Island by an uncle who took him to a baseball game his first day in New York where he saw Babe Ruth hit a home run!  My father worked hard to learn the English language, and assimilate to the American way of life.

Eventually, my dad made his way to Michigan, where he heard a man named Henry Ford was hiring workers for the Ford Motor Company.  My dad stood in a line with many others, hoping Henry Ford would pick him for a job.  One day, Henry Ford chose my dad and he spent 42 years working for Ford Motor Company! He sang with the Ford Choir and was flown back to New York with the choir to sing for the Ed Sullivan Show!

My dad was a Pitcher for the Ford Slow-Pitch softball team and his love for baseball continued to the end.  He loved America and believed in the "American Dream."  My dad taught me I could accomplish any goal with hard work and discipline.  He especially encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming a Dentist; something I decided in 7th Grade!

My mother was 100% Swedish and proud of her heritage.  My grandparents came from Sweden to the United States following a long boat passage.  When my mother was 11 years old, her parents returned to Sweden by boat to introduce their three children to the family in Sweden.  My mother told me she returned to the United States a year later speaking fluent Swedish!

My mother attended the University of Michigan and became a registered nurse- Go Blue!  She met my father at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.  Apparently, this was the place to meet and be seen at the time...

My father loved to dance (the Spanish in him) and my mother was a reserved Swede raised to believe dancing was immoral.  Opposites do attract and the rest as they say, "Is history."

In November of 1954 a cold Swede and a hot Latin married and I was welcomed the following August.  My mother was age 40 when I was born and my father was age 47.  Their dream of a family  and their new world together revolved around raising me and my younger brother.

Regardless of events happening in the United States of America today; I still believe in the "American Dream," just as my father who traveled as a young man to an unknown place in search of a better life than the island life he knew.  My Swedish grandparents too, traveled from a far-away island to a new world in search of a better life for the family they would welcome.

My parents and grandparents dedicated their lives to raising children in a country they believed would provide a better future than the homeland they left.  My parents never abandoned their heritage- I grew up learning about both islands.  My dad used to eat raw sugarcane and lost all of his teeth because of this.  My mother lamented her "Swedish Pancakes" were never as tasty as my grandmother's.  I thought they were delicious and her homemade strawberry jam made them perfect!

Although my parents were proud of their Swedish and Spanish heritages; they were more proud to be living as Americans in the land of the free and the home of the brave.  Later in life, the tempest of illness forced my parents to lose their independence and personal freedom as their ships came in for mooring.

Parenting is a lot like piloting a boat, which is making a journey across an ocean.  Parents like to plan for smooth sailing, not turbulent seas.  The uncertainty of school this Fall due to Covid19 is a storm of ebbs and flows requiring a constant change of course while attempting to identify navigational points.

Our son Philip is a 2020 college graduate, which makes me very proud and relieved.  In our home, we believe parents are the primary educators of their children.  Some years, Philip attended school in person.  Other years, Philip home-schooled.  As a sophomore in high school, Philip did on-line schooling.

As parents, we have to identify the navigational points, which allow the home ship to remain steady regardless of the raging storm.

Henry Ford quotes -

"Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success."

"History is more or less bunk."

"Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right!"

"There is no man living who isn't capable of doing more than he thinks he can do."

"Most people spend more time and energy going around problems than in trying to solve them."

"It doesn't matter to me if the man is from Harvard or Sing Sing.  We hire the man, not his history."

"What's right about America is that although we have a mess of problems, we have great capacity - intellect and resources- to do some thing about them."

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."

"Any color- as long as it's black."

"Don't find fault, find a remedy."

"I believe God is managing affairs and that He doesn't need any advice from me.  With God  in charge, I believe everything will work out for the best in the end.  So what is there to worry about."

ANNOUNCING TELEHEALTH APPOINTMENTS

 We've got an exciting announcement!

Dr. Jusino is now offering telehealth—appointments that take place from the comfort of your own home. This means  if our office is closed (or if you simply feel more comfortable meeting with us virtually), you can now do so. Many consultations with Dr. Jusino can easily take place remotely (patients on supervision recall, retainer checks, questions about proper wearing of elastics, oral hygiene effectiveness, possible emergencies such as loose brackets or poking wires, questions or concerns about treatment...)  These visits use secure video methods so you can rest assured that all of your healthcare information is kept private.

How does it work?

Simply call (248) 476-3000 or text (248) 476-3000 our office asking to schedule a telehealth appointment. A trusted member of the All Star Team will determine if you need a quick phone call with Dr. Jusino, or a full virtual visit. If a video appointment is selected; a short time before your scheduled appointment, you will receive a text message with a link. Simply click this link and follow any instructions to start your appointment. Dr. Jusino will review your health information, give you guidance and answer any questions or concerns you may have. If Dr. Jusino determines you need to be seen in person, he will direct his staff to schedule you accordingly.

We can’t wait to see you—
either virtually or in person.

Happy Easter and Happy Passover

Let's celebrate Easter and Passover with those we are quarantined with!

Let's make our celebrations special...watch streamlined services from your Church or Synagogue, make a special meal...play a board game, go for a walk, read a book together. Do something special to create a memory of this great event!

I can be reached for emergencies -

(586) 856-6660

I am also face-timing patients and parents; I am referring to this as, "Tele-Orthodontics." I have been successful eliminating patient appointments to the office with this method.  If you have questions or just want to talk about your treatment- I am available!

Hopefully, the office will re-open in May.  Appointments are being rescheduled beginning with patients affected with the first closed date of March 23, 2020.  Be patient, our goal is to keep you on track with your care.

I am also sending out Newsletters via E-Mail;  please watch for these.  If your E-Mail address is not on file at the office; provide the information, and I will update our records.

Patients- Brush 3x/day, and floss 1x/day.  Be careful with the foods you eat to avoid breakage and loose brackets.

If you need supplies, such as elastics or flossers; let me know, and I will make certain you receive these.

Follow me on Facebook, and Instagram

Enjoy your Holiday and time with loved ones; I miss all of you, and I can't wait to see you.

Temporary Closure of the Office Effective March 23, 2020 through April 2, 2020

Doing our part to stop the spread of COVID-19

In light of concerns surrounding coronovirus and in response to the latest recommendation from the White House, we are suspending all non-essential care through April 2, 2020.

Dr. Jusino will be available for emergency appointments:

(586) 856-6660

If you have an appointment scheduled during this time, we will contact you as possible to reschedule.  If you have an urgent need during this time, such as pain or injury; contact Dr. Jusino.

Let us take advantage of these days spending time with loved ones - play a board game, take a walk, clean the yard, get ready for Spring, plant a garden, learn a new hobby, take a nap, spend time in prayer or meditation, journal about the experience of these days...

May we return renewed, refreshed, better, smarter, more compassionate and stronger than ever before.

Dr. Thomas Jusino

A note to Patients -

No more excuses about not having enough time to brush 3x/day and floss 1x/day

No more excuses about not wearing your elastics

This is your opportunity to develop independent skills for learning.  You may not be aware of this fact, but the Jusino Family home-schooled for a number of years.  Our advice- take it a day at a time, and commit to a schedule.  Create structure, and build in plenty of time for fun!

No one is responsible for your boredom, but you-

There is always something to be done- empty the dishwasher, sort the laundry, run the vacuum, clean the garage, wash your bike, and then go for a bike ride...

Imagine the conversations we will have at your next appointment!  I can't wait to hear how you are doing, and don't forget about earning Tooth Tokens for:

Achieving Academic Excellence

When I see you next, tell me about the book you are reading; tell me about your adjustment to learning at home - I am interested!
